Entrance-to-Major Requirements

Students in ENGR_PMAJ or ENGAE_PMAJ and First Year Students (FYR) from other Penn State Colleges

The following Entrance-to-Major (ETM) process applies to incoming first year students starting at Penn State and first year students returning to Penn State through re-enrollment. These requirements do NOT apply to transfer students. Transfer Student Entrance-to-Major processes can be found here.

Step 1: Complete 29-55 graded Penn State credits at Penn State (excludes transfer and AP credits)

You are eligible to apply for entry to a College of Engineering major once you have completed 29 graded Penn State credits (excludes transfer and AP credits) at Penn State. You must request your major change before you have completed more than 55 graded Penn State credits. Students requesting non-enrollment-controlled majors may request consideration for an extension.

Step 2: Check your cumulative GPA

At the time you apply for ETM, your cumulative GPA must be at or above the published minimum GPA for the major.

Step 3: Ensure you have scheduled or completed required ETM courses

At the time you apply, you must be scheduled for or have completed, with a C or better, select ETM courses specific to your major.

Step 4: Apply for a major

Use the Update Academics function within your LionPATH Student Center page to officially request your intended major.

If at any time you have questions about how your schedule or performance will impact your eligibility to qualify for a College of Engineering major, be sure to contact an appropriate academic adviser.
