New and Re-enrolling Students - Summer 2020 or Later

The following Entrance-to-Major (ETM) process applies to incoming students starting at Penn State in summer 2020 or later, or students returning to Penn State through re-enrollment in summer 2020 or later. For more information about major-specific ETM requirements, visit the College of Engineering Baccalaureate Degrees section of the Penn State Undergraduate Bulletin, select your intended major, and then the “How to Get In” tab.

Step 1: Complete 29-55 cumulative credits at Penn State

You are eligible to apply for entry to a College of Engineering major once you have completed 29 cumulative credits at Penn State. You must request the major in LionPATH using Update Academics before you have completed more than 55 cumulative credits at Penn State. Students requesting non-enrollment-controlled majors may request consideration for an extension.

Step 2: Check your cumulative GPA

At the time you apply for ETM, your cumulative GPA must be at or above the published minimum GPA for the major.

These GPAs apply only to students starting at Penn State in Summer 2020 or later
Major Cumulative GPA

Step 3: Ensure you have scheduled or completed required ETM courses

At the time you apply, you must be scheduled for or have completed, with a C or better, the following ETM courses:

  • CMPSC: CMPSC 121 or CMPSC 131, CMPSC 122 or CMPSC 132, MATH 140, MATH 141, PHYS 211
  • CMPEN: CMPSC 121 or CMPSC 131, CHEM 110, MATH 140, MATH 141, PHYS 211
  • DTSCE: CMPSC 121 or 131, CMPSC 122 or 132, MATH 140, MATH 141, and STAT 200 or DS 200
  • EE: EDSGN 100 or CMPSC 121 or CMPSC 131, CHEM 110, MATH 140, MATH 141, PHYS 211
  • All other COE majors: EDSGN 100, CHEM 110, MATH 140, MATH 141, and PHYS 211

Step 4: Apply for a major
